We believe in high standardization to ensure high quality and safe utility services to everyone
Looking back a couple of decades, if it had been said that the much-needed utility services for the Maldivian islands in outer regions would one day be provided under a single umbrella, many might not have believed it. Several factors, especially the archipelagic nature of the country as well as each island having their own administration made people believe the idea impractical and dysfunctional. However, the deteriorating conditions of the utility sector in many islands, due to the small population and low returns, were calling out for urgent action by the government.
This was the case until the formation of six regional state-owned utility companies in 2009, which shed a positive light on the prevailing pessimism. Despite heavy skepticism, the utility companies began a tremendous journey to acquire the utility-related operations of regional islands. Before long, in 2012, a new state-owned company was incorporated in place of regional utility companies. Thus began our story as Fenaka Corporation Limited. The word ‘Fenaka’ derives from Dhivehi language with first syllables of the words for water (fen), sewer (narudhama) and electricity (karantu), which are the three main utility services we provide. Ever since we have been making the impossible possible, and changing the livelihood of thousands.
Today, with operations in over 150 island communities, we are the largest state-owned utility provider in the Maldives. With this prominence, we have been going forward in our journey to become the benchmarked utility service provider nationwide. One of our notable achievements so far has been to provide 24/7 electricity to all the islands we serve and thus reaching the national target of providing electricity to each and every household. In addition to electricity, we have also outreached our water and sewer facilities to many islands during the short history of the company. In reaching these milestones, we paid great attention to ensure that even the smallest of our consumer base received the services to the same standards as the larger consumer bases. Valuing our consumers this way has also provided us immense satisfaction as we see them today reaching new heights of social and economic development, side by side with our employees and other stakeholders.
